FAQs

A) Sport Relief harnesses the power and passion of sport to change lives for the better.

By doing sport, having fun and raising money, everyone can do good and feel good.

At its very heart is the Sainsbury’s Sport Relief Mile where hundreds of thousands of people across the country will take to the streets to raise cash.

The money raised is spent by Comic Relief to help vulnerable people living incredibly tough lives both at home in the UK and in the world’s poorest countries.

A) Half of the money you raise will be spent in the UK to help give those living in disadvantaged and divided communities a better life; the other half will help children and young people in the world’s poorest countries, faced with the daily reality of extreme poverty, abuse and exploitation.

A) Over 250 events will take place all over the country.

A) It really depends on how many participants and volunteers you can recruit and how big you want your event to be.

A) Anyone! We encourage organisers to speak to local community and sports groups who may be able to help out with the event. Getting an organising committee together will make arranging the event easier and also add to the fun!

A) We will provide:
  • your own event page our website - we will register participants, so you don't have to
  • promotional materials such as posters and flyers
  • an organisers kit - including everything you need to organise, publicise and deliver a safe, successful event
  • event materials such as: branded Start/Finish banners, organisers t-shirts, entry forms, goody bags, bottles of water and lots more
  • Information days all over the UK to help guide you through the entire process of organising your mile event
  • a support helpline to call anytime you have a query

A) Everyone! The events themselves are all about giving people the chance to set themselves a personal challenge, to raise money and to have fun. Individuals don’t have to be an Olympic Gold Medallist to do a mile. From running novices to marathon pros - the Sainsbury’s Sport Relief Mile will cater for everyone and literally anyone can get involved.

A) Yes.

A) We encourage all organisers to plan events that can cater for a minimum of 250 – 300 participants.

A) Anywhere that offers a safe and fun environment along with a suitable route that can accommodate milers looking to run 1, 3 and 6 miles. Venue considerations should include:
  • it's size and how many people it can hold
  • whether it has an undercover area in case of bad weather
  • whether there are any changing or car-parking facilities
  • whether the venue is accessible for disabled people/push chairs etc.

A) By organising a Sainsbury's Sport Relief Mile, you'll not only help to raise loads of cash to change lives both in the UK and across the world's poorest countries, you'll also reap the rewards too.

Depending on where/who you are you may have a chance to:
  • raise your profile, recruit new members and give your current members a great day out
  • showcase your venue
  • gain amazing publicity - we will advise you on how to the get maximum coverage from your local media. Plus you'll be a part of a hugely publicised BBC event - great PR in itself
  • bring local organisations in your community together
  • offer staff the opportunity to help organise a major event
  • promote your club as community-based, inclusive and active in supporting a great cause

A) Unfortunately not. The flagship events are very large events that have already been planned in conjunction with a number of local councils and the BBC.

A) There isn’t a deadline but applications are required asap on a first come, first served basis.

A) Yes.

A) This year we will be offering participants the challenge of running either one, three or six miles, this means that the course you set out will have to be a mile long and offer participants the opportunity to run round it up to six times.

A) No. The events themselves are all about giving people the chance to set themselves (or family/friends/colleagues etc) a personal challenge, to raise money and to have fun. The choice of 1, 3 or 6 miles reflects this challenge.

A) We are encouraging organisers to plan a route that will allow 3 and 6 milers simply to run the course a number of times. Therefore we recommend using a circular route but are open to suggestions.

A) Yes – however a solid surface would be preferable as wet weather in February could affect your course in March. It is also easier for wheel and push chairs if the route is as flat and solid as possible. If the route is on grass please check drainage etc.

A) Sainsbury’s Sport Relief Mile events are specifically based around a sport theme. However, that doesn’t mean you can’t organise a different type of event for Sport Relief! We can put you in touch with our Fundraising Team who will provide you with advice on running alternative events.

A) Of course – and we fully encourage this. Entertainment can add to the atmosphere of the event immensely.
